No, I’m not pulling your leg here. You really do have TWO brains – one is your brain brain and the second is in your GUT! The technical term for your second brain is the enteric nervous system (ENS). This system contains 200 to 600 million nerve cells that are all in your digestive tract…and not just your intestines, I mean the WHOLE thing from mouth to anus!

Your ENS is crucial in helping you have healthy digestion, the state of your emotional well-being and even how diseases manifest in your body. If you gut is upset, your brain is upset…and vice versa. 90% of serotonin is produced in your gut, so if there is an imbalance you are going to FEEL it in your brain. They work together to give you optimal health or really cause stress throughout your entire body. Pretty crazy huh?

One important thing to focus on in your life is keeping your gut-brain axis communicating and relaxed because it is your overall well-being. So how can you even support something like this?!

It’s easier than you think…

How to support your Gut-Brain Axis:

• Activate and strengthen your vagus nerve through breathwork (I have a meditation here), yoga, singing, humming, cold plunge, etc.
• Enjoy anti-inflammatory foods and omega-3 fatty acids such as avocados, olive oil, salmon, whole grains, fruits, vegetables, eggs, fermented foods, REAL WHOLE FOODS!
• Manage your stress. Now stress is inevitable…but if you can work on how you react and creating less of a stress spike the better off you will be!
