Reduce Cravings by Boosting Your Gut Health!

Jun 27, 2022

Food cravings can come from a lot of things: over-consuming certain foods, memories that trigger cravings, seeing someone else eating something, particles sitting on your tongue, needing certain nutrients, etc.

But the one I want to focus on is how your cravings could potentially be caused by is what’s going on inside of your gut microbiome!

When cravings hit whether they are sweet, salty, savory, you name it – it can be a result of the organism hosts living in your gut. The organisms living in your gut microbiome WANT certain foods so they can thrive and grow over the “good” bacteria your body needs to stay healthy.

So when you start to crave foods with no explanation that you seem to crave every single day…it’s probably the “bad” bacteria trying to take over your gut microbiome influencing your taste receptors. You know, survival of the fittest!

When your gut microbiome is less diverse (as in you eat the same things weekly and don’t try to eat the rainbow) there suddenly is no competition between organism hosts – this causes the “good” hosts to be manipulated or even reduced greatly so the “bad” hosts boosts it’s own survival increasing cravings for foods you don’t necessarily want to eat every day.

SO, ways you can improve your gut microbiome to reduce cravings (which can actually help promote weight loss too):

  1. Eat the Rainbow. Diversify the fruits and vegetables you eat daily so your “good” bacteria suddenly makes it harder for the hosts you don’t want to survive or overpower the foods you crave.
  2. Have Fun Getting Creative with Healthy Swaps. The sooner you can crowd out what you are craving for something similar or that is healthier to ease the craving in the moment while you revive your gut microbiome, the easier the switch will be. Swap the potato chips for salty homemade kale chips or the Snickers for a piece of dark chocolate or the fried chicken for homemade ground flax breaded chicken.
  3. Take a probiotic daily. Taking a probiotic will keep “good” bacteria coming into your gut to help revive your biome and slowly crowd out the bacteria you don’t want that are causing your cravings.

Taking care of your gut health is the #1 thing you can do to improve your overall health…it is seriously linked to EVERYTHING! So, Happy Gut Rebooting!
